nicola’s friend was having a mexican themed birthday party and she invited me to come along. we met at 8pm on saturday night in chilango on upper st. nicola was wearing a sombrero and the guy in chilango was so impressed he gave her burrito vouchers.
before the party we went for a drink in the electricity showrooms on old street. nicola is from manchester, but moved to london about 4 years ago to study and has done two graphic design related courses. she described an abstract style of design, but likes many kinds of art, she mentioned chris offili and an ‘amazing’ recent picasso exhibition in helsinki. wow, i thought. often i meet people who have the same keen interest in particular sports stars or movies but rarely of artists. i mean, we are talking about an artist who titled a painting ‘the adoration of captain shit and the legend of the black stars’! 🙂
nicola loves travelling, her favourite part of the world is south east asia, but listed so many other places she would like to visit, everywhere it seems, but usa, ‘i don’t get their sense of humor’. her adventurous nature comes from her mum. her mum took her brother bungee jumping for his birthday recently and went with him! and she is going to the lovebox festival with nicola this summer. i also like going to events with my mum, but more horse racing and tennis matches than festivals and bungee jumping. i teased that there might be an opportunity to bring her mum on a burrito date!
i was exhausted before the date. i was moving, thinking and talking at a slow pace. i haven’t been sleeping much, work constantly on my mind. nicola graduated last year and has been doing internships at places like wallpaper magazine, and we are vi, to get a feel of what she would like to do. she seems to favour either graphic design or more client facing project management roles at design publications, such as wallpaper or monocle. it was nicola’s turn to be slow when she asked what number burrito date she was, i said she was number 8, but joked that she was more like a 5, or a 6. it took her a while to get offended. seriously though, she is more of a 9 😉
the house party consisted of lots of sombreros, tequila shots, mexican mustaches attached to knees (pic1), a host – jen (pic2) and a hat made of tortilla chips with salsa on top (pic3). i had fun, glad i went. i’m not sure how well nicola and i got on, she was hard to read. how do you guys think it went?
